When to Use a vCard QR Code

You're at a trade show. You hand someone your business card. They pocket it, forget about it, and it ends up in a drawer. Sound familiar?

A vCard QR code fixes this. When someone scans it, your name, phone number, email, and company are saved directly into their phone's contacts — instantly, accurately, and without them typing a single character. It works offline, on every smartphone, and turns a forgettable card exchange into a saved contact.

It's the best QR code type for business cards, name badges, email signatures, and conference materials.

vCard QR Code vs. URL QR Code — Which Should You Use?

vCard QR Code URL QR Code
What it does Saves contact info to phone contacts Opens a web page
Needs internet? No (static) Yes
Best for Business cards, name badges, networking Portfolios, landing pages, booking links
Data density Higher (more data = denser pattern) Lower (just a URL string)
Updatable? Only with dynamic code Only with dynamic code

Rule of thumb: If you want people to save your number, use vCard. If you want people to visit a page, use a URL QR code. Many professionals put both on their business card.

How to Create a vCard QR Code

  1. Select the vCard tab in the generator above (it's already selected on this page).
  2. Fill in your details: first name, last name, phone, email, company, job title, and website. Only name is required — add as much or as little as you want.
  3. Customize the look. Open the Customize panel to set brand colors, change the dot pattern, or upload your company logo.
  4. Download as SVG for print (business cards, badges) or PNG for digital (email signatures, presentations).
  5. Test it. Scan with your phone and confirm all fields save correctly to your contacts.

Where to Use Your vCard QR Code

Business Cards

Print the QR code on the back. People scan it instead of manually typing your details — no lost contacts. See our business card QR guide for layout and sizing tips.

Conference Name Badges

Add a QR code to your badge so other attendees can save your contact with a quick scan. Faster than swapping cards.

Email Signatures

Embed a small vCard QR code in your email signature. Recipients can scan from their screen to save your details to their phone.

Real Estate Signs

Buyers scan the agent's QR code on a yard sign and instantly have the agent's phone number and email — no writing things down.

Frequently Asked Questions

A vCard QR code can store your full name, job title, company, phone number, email address, website URL, and street address. All of this gets saved to the scanner's phone contacts in one tap.

A URL QR code opens a web page. A vCard QR code saves your contact information directly to the person's phone contacts — no internet connection required. If your goal is for people to save your number and email, use a vCard. If you want them to visit a page, use a URL code.

Yes. Static vCard QR codes encode all the contact data directly in the QR pattern. The scanner's phone reads the data and offers to save it as a contact — no network needed.

Not with a static vCard code — the info is baked into the pattern. If you need to update details later (new phone number, new job title), use a dynamic QR code. It links to a hosted vCard that you can edit from your Scansprout dashboard.

At least 0.8 inches (2 cm) square, though 1 inch is safer. vCard codes are denser than URL codes because they encode more data, so they need a bit more space to scan reliably. Check our printing guide for more detail.
